Smaug’s ruminations

Samu “Smaug” Kytölä
Postdoctoral researcher, University of Jyväskylä
President, Kampuksen Dynamo
Manager of the futsal team

Ave, Antequera!

The joys and regrets of the Finnish futsal season 2012/13 are over, the bronze-flavoured dust has settled; after a well-deserved spring break, we in Kampuksen Dynamo (“KaDy”) are getting prepared for our fourth consecutive EUC futsal tournament. Previous years have seen our team both over-achieve – with triumphs over higher-ranked futsal giants – and soak in disappointment – with bitter defeats at the threshold of the semifinals. Ironically, each time around it has been a Spanish side (whether the University of Málaga, Valencia or Córdoba) that ultimately managed to disqualify KaDy from higher positions. On the other side of the coin, our fondest EUC memories include narrow victories over the Universities of Évry Val d'Essonne (2010), Belgrade (2011) or Tbilisi(2012), the latter of which managed to qualify from our ‘group of death’ and make it all the way to the bronze medals in last year’s Córdoba heat. With just a little bit of luck and speculation, medals and Europe glory in our return luggage could be reality already – but will it this time around? These days will tell.

When Tero “Q” Kelhälä stepped aside from our main coach’s position after the 2012 EUSA games in Córdoba, we luckily did not need to look further afield for a competent follower. Kerkko “Georg” Huhtanen (now 31) had been studying meticulously not only the Social Sciences of Sports but also the essence of futsal, and was at once ready for the challenge. Contrary to his predecessors, “Georg” has remained an active key player in his own squad, combining the two roles in his first domestic league season in charge. The year turned out a success for Dynamo: even the hardest competitors were left behind as the Jyväskylä side ruled sovereign over the Finnish Super Cup, the Finnish Futsal Cup and the regular season of the Finnish futsal league. KaDy’s playing was getting more versatile and the players’ physical shape ever better, in no small proportion thanks to the physical coach Jussi “Kaïhlos” Kaihlajärvi’s (30) contribution. Meanwhile, six Dynamo players were selected for the national team’s broader roster, four of them making it to the Finland's playing lineup. (You will see some of them on the pitch in Antequera.) The only unlucky moment when KaDy slipped from sheer sovereignty was the spellbound league semifinals, when the four-fold champions, Ilves FS from Tampere, defended their goal successfully, leaving us goalless not once but twice – home and away. (Sigh.) However, the victorious and entertaining bronze medal match and the Finnish Universities Championship in April on the home ground, along with some sauna, spring outings and sprightly socializing at the “KaDy House” in downtown Jyväskylä, brought some remedy for our dispirited athletes. The bitterness of late winter is long gone now, and KaDy are all set and hungry for new challenges – starting with the present EUC tournament.

Due to a recent ruling by EUSA, the age limit of its forthcoming competitions will be set to 17–28 – in spite of the great number of European university students over 28 years of age. Sad news to us, as it seems that this year’s Antequera competition will remain the last of its kind for the majority of the “Golden Generation” of Dynamo’s futsal history.

Funds have been raised… “flight craps” have been booked… nearly everyone is “IN”… teletext (p. 288) has been enjoyed with red wine… more information can only be obtained “by telephone” – “the adder faces” are on the road again!
Here we come, blessed Andalusia!
